As per Indian mythology, he is imagined as an ascetic in meditation. His body is smeared with ashes, symbolic of him lighting fire to and destroying all desires, overcoming them all.

In Indian mythology, Krishna–an incarnation of Vishnu–is the breaker and maker of rules. He is different from his other incarnations such as Ram, who was the follower of rules, and Parashuram, who was the enforcer of rules.
Each incarnation is a response to the situation of society/culture at a given period of time.
